Student mentoring has been shown to be the single-most important factor for success. A mentor’s role is to guide the intern toward substantial personal and technical growth. The individual must have the ability to communicate with young adults and be interested in playing a role that not only develops the intern but also benefits the business and the community.
Benefits to a Mentor include:
- Satisfaction assisting young adults grow in skill and experience
- Opportunity to share experiences both in technical skill and academic need
- Create relationship with education and industry
- Better understand the challenges both school and young adult face
- Take pride in establishing a “helping hand” in a very challenging environment
Mentor’s responsibilities are numerous and include:
- Establishing a comfortable relationship so that communication takes place
- Facilitate intern’s relationship within the collision repair shop and personnel
- Guide intern through hands-on development to enhance technical skill and productivity
- Stress importance of basic academic and computer skill
- Emphasize the importance of continuing education to stay current with evolving technology
- Close interface with school administration and instructor to direct interns progress according to curriculum/task list and individual need
