Education Foundation News: 1999 Education Foundation Press Releases: 1999 ArchivesJanuary 22, 1999 THE I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION'S TEAM USA PREPARES FOR THE 1999 INTERNATIONAL YOUTH SKILLS COMPETITION (IYSC) (Rolling Meadows, IL) Team USA geared-up for the 1999 IYSC by participating in a skills demonstration at the International Auto Body Congress and Exposition (NACE) this past December. Although the event was not a "competition," Team USA members, Eric Stark of Largo, Florida and Caleb Burnison of Wichita, Kansas were able to test their skills against six talented collision repair students from the Southern region. For many years, the U.S. failed to place or even challenge at the international competitions. Team USA was established to provide U.S. competitors with the additional training and support necessary to make them contenders. The International Youth Skills Competition is a prestigious event, which takes place every two years in a different country. In November 1999, Team USA will compete at the IYSC in Montreal, Quebec. The skills demonstration was Eric and Caleb's first Team USA experience since being selected as members, and a valuable opportunity for them to practice and enhance their skills before competing at the IYSC. The eight participants, all under the age of 21, impressed spectators and judges with their skill, competitiveness and workmanship. Four of the participants, including one female, demonstrated their abilities in "structural repair" while the other four displayed their talents in "automotive refinishing." This was the first time ever the event had a female participant! According to Ron Ray, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation, "the skills demonstration provided a great assessment of Team USA and helped us determine which skill areas Eric and Caleb still need work on before the international competition. Additionally, the other participants gained valuable experience for future Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) competitions." PPG Industries Inc., Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp., Snap-on Tools, Automotive Service Association (ASA), VICA and the I-CAR Education Foundation were proud sponsors of the event. Several other companies donated parts, equipment and supplies to make the demonstration possible. The I-CAR Education Foundation, founded in 1991, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality and number of entry-level employees for the Collision Industry. |
