Education Foundation News: 1997 Education Foundation Press Releases: 1997 ArchivesOctober 28, 1997 I-CAR Education Foundation Begins Phase II of Team USA Campaign (Rolling Meadows, IL) Following up the very successful 1997 Team USA campaign, the I-CAR Education Foundation recently announced its plans to participate in a similar campaign over the next two years in preparation for the 1999 International Youth Skills Competitions. In 1997, the Foundation created an industry image-enhancing poster and brochure campaign and introduced a web page dedicated to this effort. Two competitors joined Team USA and competed in July in Switzerland, each turning in a top-ten performance. According to Mark Claypool, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation, phase II of this campaign will kick off with Team USA trials at the 1997 NACE in Las Vegas. Trials will be held in collision repair technology and automotive refinishing. Four competitors, in each contest, will compete for a spot on the 1999 Team USA that will compete against the best in the world at the International competition in November of 1999 in Montreal. These competitors where chosen by National VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) based on their scores in the Skills USA Championships this past summer. Joining the I-CAR Education Foundation in this campaign are financial sponsors PPG Industries, Sherwin-Williams and Snap-on Tools. ASA is donating the space required to conduct the Team USA trials. In addition, Enterprise Rent-a-Car is honoring the instructors and chief administrators of the schools that produce the selected Team USA competitors by donating a special three day rental of an Enterprise car. "We could not spearhead such a campaign without the strong support of the Collision industry," said Claypool. "The partners who have joined us in this effort recognize the importance of highlighting careers in this industry and view the sponsorship of Team USA as a way to accomplish this objective." After Team USA has been selected, the Foundation will launch another poster and brochure campaign. The Team USA Web Site (http://www.team-usa.org) has been updated as well. During the NACE trade show, daily updates will be posted, along with photos, showing how the competitors are doing in the trials. During a four month period, earlier this year, the web site received 6,500 "hits". "People in this industry were very interested in the training our Team USA competitors were receiving in preparation for the Internationals this year," explained Claypool. "During the competition in Switzerland, we received up to 400 hits a day. People couldn't wait to see how our guys were doing."
